Job Summary

The Locum Clinical Nurse will be responsible for preparing consultation rooms, performing basic patient assessments, ensuring the smooth flow of patients, assisting physicians with procedures, providing wound care, educating patients and families, and maintaining a safe and efficient clinical environment within the Surgical Consulting Clinics.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares consultation rooms, ensuring availability of stocks, linen, basic equipment, and stationery at all times.
  • Performs basic assessments for all patients attending the clinic, including measuring vital signs, height, and weight, and designs care specific to individual needs.
  • Confirms the presence of imaging and pathology reports in CARE 2000 before the patient sees the doctor.
  • Prepares patients for physician examinations and acts as a chaperone when necessary.
  • Maintains an orderly, efficient, and timely flow of patients within the clinics.
  • Assists the physician with clinic procedures where applicable and performs basic tests such as Glucose tests and urinalysis.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in wound care management.
  • Assesses patient and family education needs and provides appropriate teaching based on their needs.
  • Arranges for patients’ admission to the wards when necessary.
  • Ensures the safety of special populations such as pediatric, elderly, psychiatric, and patients with disabilities.
  • Instructs patients and families regarding medications, investigations, and follow-up clinic appointments.
  • Demonstrates awareness of community resources available to patients and assists with referrals when necessary.
  • Observes infection control practices and maintains a clean and safe work environment for staff and patients.
  • Maintains open communication with the patient and the multidisciplinary team in the clinics to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Participates in data collection and monitoring of the clinic’s quality indicators.
  • Is accountable for the judicious and efficient use of resources, including accurate and timely billing of ward stock, drugs, and consumables.
  • Responsible for the safe use of equipment through cleaning, storage, per-shift checks of inventory, and timely reporting of non-functional equipment to the unit supervisor.
  • Ensures compliance with health and safety guidelines for staff and patients, reporting any accidents, incidents, hazards, or equipment defects according to laid-down policies.
  • Participates in unit-based nursing education, quality improvement (QI) projects, Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC), audits, spot checks, and skill checks.

Requirements:

  • KRCHN (Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse) or BScN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) from a recognized School of Nursing or University.
  • Current Licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Demonstrate evidence-based knowledge of current practices in Medical-Surgical nursing.
