Job Summary

The Biomedical Engineering Technologist will be responsible for ensuring the proper maintenance, safety, and sound condition of all medical equipment in the hospital. This role involves inspecting, repairing, and installing biomedical equipment, as well as keeping records and participating in equipment validation activities. The Biomedical Engineering Technologist will play a crucial role in ensuring that medical equipment is readily available and functioning optimally to support quality patient care.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, repair, carry out preventive maintenance, and install biomedical equipment, including ICU, Renal, Laboratory, Physical Medicine, and ward equipment.
  • Keep records of all job cards, PPM schedules, and tasks performed.
  • Create test procedures for all hospital equipment.
  • Participate in equipment or process validation activities.
  • Handle all biomedical equipment job requests.
  • Modify equipment to meet unique operational or research needs.
  • Train hospital staff and researchers on how to operate equipment.
  • Observe and comply with environmental health and occupational safety measures and regulations.
  • Order spare parts and consumables needed for preventive maintenance and repair.
  • Ensure hospital equipment is serviced and calibrated regularly.
  • Prepare maintenance budgets and organize the purchase of medical equipment spare parts.
  • Maintain documentation on all equipment, inspections, equipment repairs, and failures.
  • Assist with and evaluate third-party repairs.
  • Organize courses for other health workers on the proper and safe usage of medical equipment.
  • Advise on all matters concerning biomedical equipment.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance and repairs of biomedical equipment within established quality standards and procedures.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance of electrical distribution systems and plant equipment within the Biomedical unit.
  • Supervise staff, including work scheduling and execution.
  • Ensure continuous training of biomedical equipment users on machine handling.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Degree/Diploma in Medical Engineering or any other equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • At least three years of experience working in a busy hospital setting.
  • Proven competence, ability, and efficiency in organizing and managing maintenance services.
  • Must be precise and accurate.
  • Must demonstrate high integrity and ethical practice.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to execute work assigned with minimum supervision.
  • Must be a team player who is able to work cordially in teams.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to multitask.
  • Should have the ability to solve problems by applying relevant knowledge.
  • Must be able to work under pressure.
  • Must be flexible, willing to learn, and able to work flexible hours to achieve goals.
  • Must be able to deliver targets and be a good planner who pays attention to detail.
  • Must have knowledge of MS Office packages.
