Job Summary
The Animal Production Technician will be responsible for implementing practical activities related to animal production, providing animal care, and assisting in the maintenance of the university's farm facilities. This role involves providing hands-on support for animal husbandry instruction, conducting fieldwork, and contributing to the practical learning experiences of students.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Implementing practical activities as planned with the respective lecturers.
- Treating any sick animals at the farm at no fee except for the cost of drugs and tools/equipment.
- Supervising repairs and cleanliness of animal structures.
- Supervising the feeding of farm animals.
- Planning exhibitions and farmers' training at the farm and elsewhere as may be required.
- Setting up and maintaining laboratory and farm equipment for practical sessions and research.
- Ensuring that all equipment, supplies, specimens, and reagents are available.
- Maintaining laboratory solutions, equipment, and apparatus.
- Overseeing the daily care and management of animals used for teaching and research.
- Collecting and preserving animal microorganisms in the laboratory.
- Assisting lecturers in demonstrating animal husbandry practices, such as feeding, breeding, health management, and record-keeping.
- Preparing and organizing teaching aids, such as charts, models, and samples, for use in lectures and practical classes.
- Keeping an inventory of laboratory and farm equipment, tools, and supplies and ensuring that all equipment is in good working condition.
- Ensuring compliance with safety and animal welfare regulations.
- Preparing reports on laboratory and farm activities for departmental review.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Diploma in Animal Health from a recognized college or university.
- Must be registered and licensed by the Kenya Veterinary Board.
- A Certificate in Artificial Insemination will be an added advantage.
- Ability to conduct laboratory analysis of animal products and feed samples.
- At least 3 years of practical experience in animal production and treatment of a wide range of farm animals.
- Must be computer literate.
